Cat: Today our guest is JL Peridot. Hello JL! Are you ready for Christmas?

JL: Getting there! Christmas is always a last-minute scramble at our place, but that’s half the fun. It’s Birak here in Perth, the local season of “first summer”, so the weather’s too beautiful to waste on worrying a great deal. We don’t get a White Christmas here, but for my friends in the Northern Hemisphere, I’d like to share my favourite winter cocktail — the Hot Toddy.

This is one of those “home remedy” drinks, which means everyone does it a little differently. It’s never on the menu in my city, but if you’re on the last legs of a cold, some bartenders will make the one their grandparents used to make, if you ask them nicely. This recipe is actually a combination of three different Hot Toddy formulations.

JL’s Hot Toddy

  • 1 bag of black tea
  • A splash of whisky
  • A stick of cinnamon
  • 2 cloves
  • A slice of lemon (for juice)
  • A curl of orange peel
  • Honey (to taste)

Pop the tea, whisky, cinnamon and cloves in a mug, then top up with hot water. Leave to brew for 3 min and remove the teabag. Squeeze in the juice from the lemon, then drop the rind in the water with the orange peel. Add honey to taste—start with a teaspoon.

This cocktail works cold too. For a Summer Toddy, brew the tea and spices for a minimum of two hours in cold water instead of hot, then add the rest of the ingredients. Rather than brewing by the mug, I recommend making a big batch of this with proportionally more honey and lemon.

Let’s talk whisky for a moment

Typically, you’d pick blended or bottom shelf liquor for a mixed drink, but if you’re feeling fancy, try using a single malt whisky with a “peaty” or “smokey” flavour profile, eg. an “Islay” or “Island” scotch whisky. These tend to be pricier bottles, but in my opinion, every respectable whisky collection should have at least one.

Out now — It Starts With A Kiss

They don’t drink whisky in my book, It Starts With A Kiss. The company is cheap and won’t fork out premium credits to ship glass bottles out to a space station. For the team, getting fired means the freedom to find meaningful work, drink good drinks, and see their families for Christmas. Celeste and Owen have one hell of a task ahead of them.

Title: It Starts With A Kiss

Celeste is a talented engineer who doesn’t realize her job’s going nowhere fast. She’s a little naïve. She’ll cut code and solder cables forever as long as Owen’s around. Owen, on the other hand, knows exactly how badly things suck—he just doesn’t care. Sure, his skills aren’t what they used to be, but they’re still better than what Halcyon Aries deserves.

Then it happens. The company’s toxic management team finally crosses the line. As both techies race to upgrade the station and to free the team from their oppressive contracts, they come to learn that life—and love—can only ever be what you make it.

Strap in for a steamy office romance in space, because sometimes It Starts With a Kiss!

How about a little more?

He took a step back. The doorway framed her like a painting, one that moved as she thumbed through the lot. She did have a wicked body. Not lithe and busty like the Blythe clones, or voluptuous like Tahnee, but petite with substance. A body he could handle without breaking.

“Aha!” She extricated a small black shirt and shoved the mass back into his hands. In the dim light, her triumphant smile lit up the corridor. “Thank you. I was not looking forward to going all the way back there.”

Something stirred down below. Owen shifted closer to the wall, angling away from the light in her room. He held the bundle of clothes in front of him with a casual posture.

“You’re welcome.” He flashed her a smile of his own. “Not that you deserve it after abandoning me back there!”

“Yeah, sorry about that.” Celeste leaned back against the door frame. “I’d had enough. That’s our Elle, though.”

The light moved across her body now. She stood not just as a silhouette, but a curvy and strong looking body, bathed in a soft orange glow; good enough to grab, good enough to bite. Was it true—was she really into him? What would she say if he invited her to his room?

He rubbed the back of his neck. “I was just joshing. Elle was out of line. I should have said something—”

Celly waved it off. “You tried. Don’t worry about it. That’s just her. She’s been on my arse all week too. It doesn’t bother me anymore.”

But it did. He saw it in her tense brow, though she smiled and shrugged. Owen waited. It looked like she might say something else, maybe invite him in to stay the night.

He’d say yes, of course. It had been months since he’d been with anyone. It wouldn’t be a fuck and forget either. They worked together. They were friends. It could be fun. Maybe fun that could happen again after. Wouldn’t that make things a little more interesting around here?

Unless that’s what Eleanor meant by leading her on.

If she was seriously into him, she probably wouldn’t go for that at all.
