Hello everyone, Welcome to  Divine Magazines Summer  2016 Blog hop

The theme is Summer memories, tips, recipes or activities.

I have to admit I am not a summer girl. Nope, give me fall or winter anytime. I would rather curl up under warm blankets than sweat my tush off. I mean, you can only take off so many articles of clothing and still sweat! I also have allergies and asthma so I can’t get out after it gets too hot. Living in the south like I do it gets hot in June and stays that way until late September.

This year June was a bit cooler and I visited my dad in Hannibal Mo. For his birthday.  They have a big Tom Sawyer festival there on the fourth that lasts a weekend. There are races for charity, events for kids like frog jumps, tricycle races, fence painting, and mud volleyball. Dad lives right in the downtown area so we can go visit an event then go in to cool off and then got to the next and not have to stand out in the heat. This year it rained a lot so some of the events were canceled but we still had fun at the craft fair and visiting antique shops.

A tip I found for us women is that wearing a jersey maxi tank dress or a sarong dress is much cooler than jeans and tee shirts. They also look pretty as well.

While visiting my brother this year they had some outdoor activities for the children that were fun. One was a water balloon toss. First of all, you need to fill the balloons he filled 20 for each of 4 children. Take two large colanders and tie ribbons on them for helmets. Divide into two teams. One pitches one catches the object is to catch and not bust the balloons in the colander. The team to save the most balloons wins. It is much harder than it sounds. oh and there is a line for the pitcher to stand behind and a circle for the catcher.

put on your swim suits and have fun!

While the kids are playing in the pool or smashing water balloons its time to fire up the grill. Cooking outdoors keeps from heating up the house and who doesn’t like BBQ. Here in the south, nothing beats a good smoked Boston Butt or rack of ribs and you can do this while sitting in under the air. I marinate my meat overnight using a McCormick Meat marinade or some Wicker’s BBQ sauce. Early in the morning I put them in my smoker and let them cook at least 8-10 hours for the Butt and 6 for the ribs if they are baby back. I take them out wrap in foil until ready to eat.

Add potato salad, slaw, baked beans (you can bake them on the grill), slice some fresh cucumbers and tomatoes and you are ready to roll.

My favorite potato salad

2-5 pounds potatoes (depending on the crowd–figure at least one large potato for each person) for this i like the Yukon gold or the red ones

1/4 cup Mayo ( more to taste)

1 tsp Dijon mustard)

2-3 dill pickles chopped finely

1/4 cup red onion or Vidalia onion chopped finely

salt and pepper to taste

Cube potatoes into bite-size pieces (you can peel if you like I don’t) put in a pan and cover with salted water. (tip add salt till the water has a slightly salty taste..your potatoes will come out perfectly salted) bring to a boil and boil about ten minutes or until just done( a fork will go in ) don’t  over cook or they will fall apart and tun into a mashed potato salad. immediately emerge in ice water to stop the cooking.  drain and add the other ingredients adjusting to your taste.

What are some of your favorite summer tips or recipes? Did you take a vacation ?

    • My dresses are made like long Tank tops. I love them. You can wear things over the top to dress them up like sheer or crochet tops or scarves or alone as a casual cool look.I have three one nude a black and a grey I also purchased to Sarongs which with a tank top wrapped like a maxi skirt are also cool (I can’t for the life of me figure how to tie them as the other versions she showed me LOl)

  1. I am so *not* a summer gal myself! I completely understand, and breathe a deep sigh of relief the first day the temps drop 20 degrees. I hope to get a little time off this summer, but it’s our busy season at work, so maybe not.

As for favorite summer foods, I’ve discovered this black raspberry/chocolate chunk ice cream I can’t get enough of! 😀

    • I totally dislike Summer though I know its necessary for food LOL. I do like eating fresh garden stuff. I hope you get some time off. I would love some of that ice cream LOL!
