Snippet Sunday

Hi, Y’all! It’s time for Snippet Sunday again. It’s  already the end of February!  I can’t believe  how fast the month has went by. This week I am still working on second draft of Baseball Bats and Cowboy hats. Some of you may remember this from back in November. I tried to pick different snippets, but if they overlap these should be a lot smoother since I have run a grammar check and have been adding in stuff and taking stuff out. This is further down in the first section of chapter one where you finally meet the leading man.

This is still a rough draft and the only eyes on it has been mine… so remember this is a diamond in the rough please be kind.

The four that had already arrived headed to Rick’s  van unpacked their belongings and began tossing the ball around.

Rick glanced at hs watch. “I told them to be here by 11. I came a little early to make sure you still wanted to do this.”

“Oh yes.” Watching the boys playing ball and laughing lightened my heart.  I have no doubt in my mind that that this is the right decision.

Rick pulled a thick file out of his briefcase. I motioned for us to sit on the porchswing. Thankfully it was partially shady this time of the morning.

‘Here is a copy of the paperwork with all the agreements and signatures. You are not required to pay for any personal items, only to provide basic meals such as breakfast and lunch. When we have a game, the sponsors provide a light meal beforehand, and if we are on the road, we stop and get pizza or burgers on the way home. You won’t be required to wait up or cater to them.  None of these guys have any allergies. One is vegetarian. If that’s an issue I can  try to find another placement for him”.

“No, I think I can handle that, Rick. I usually make plenty of side-dishes and keep fresh vegetables handy.  There should be plenty with the garden coming off.” I couldn’t imagine turning  one of them down at this point over an eating preference, Both of my boys were picky. David only liked meat and potatoes. Stephen preferred casseroles and main dishes made with ground beef. Stephen also loved a lot of fruits and veggies.

In the distance, we could hear music blasting as a silver SUV came down the lane. A tall, sandy-haired young man climbed out of the driver’s seat and walked over to us.

“Hi, I’m Simon. Sorry if we are late. I thought we had plenty of time.” He chewed on his lower lip and stared down at the gravel.

“No Simon you’re not late. I came early to go over the terms of the agreement. Sit your bags on the porch and join the others.”

Simon popped the hatch with his key-fob. Rushing to the passenger side, he whispered to the other man that was still sitting in the car. He had the seat laid back as if he were napping. He jumped, startled, slowly emerged stretching languidly before joining Simon at the rear of the car. Simon wheeled two suitcases to where the other bags lay. He took out his glove and slowly joined the other men.

He seemed to be a little more laid back and reserved than the others.

Then the last one bounded from behind the vehicle with two duffles and a  bag of sports equipment.  His strong biceps are bulging under the weight, yet he trotted over to us, a bundle of energy packed into a tight pair of jeans a shirt stretch tight around his muscular frame and a cowboy hat on his head. He dropped the bags with the others, bounds back over to us shakes Rick’s hand then takes mine into both of his holding them securely.

“ It sure is kind of you to let us stay here in your lovely home. Coach didn’t tell us our hostess is such a beauty” He lifts my hands up to his full lips and lightly brushes them with a kiss. “Oh, I am TJ. By the way.”

“Down Casanova. Get your butt over there with the others. You’re here to play ball not charm all the women you meet!”  Rick rolls his eyes as he playfully punches TJ on the arm.I stood there mesmerized by the cutest boy—young man I’ve ever seen in years. Broad shoulders, big brown eyes and wild curly hair that’s a little too long. His handsome face in need of a shave. He would be my dream man—if only he were 20 years older.

  1. Great snippet, Cat! I’m looking forward to reading more from this. I really like how they met, and yet they weren’t instantly ‘in love’. Way to draw out the suspense. It’s going to be a good one. I can tell.

    • Thank you. I love having a visual. I like to see my characters and visualize them as they move and interact. a lot like watching a movie in my head. where they aren’t 100 percent accurate they are close to what I visualize
