Snippet Sunday

Last week  I Introduced Gypsy Rose’s mom and more than one decision Gypsy Rose needs to make. This week Frank Is visiting he Therapist to figure a way out of his accidental commitment to a  date with Gypsy Rose. I know today is Valentine’s Day but my poor couple hasn’tt made it to that first date yet so this little ditty will have to do! I hope you enjoy!

This is a rough draft and the only eyes on it has been mine… so remember this is a diamond in the rough please be kind.

“Hello Lamarr.” He doesn’t like being called Dr Jackson. I think its because a fist name basis is less intimidating to us crazies. I mean his clients.
“How has your week been?” He studies me closely. The pen begins scribbling a few words, then he turns his gaze back on me.
“Uneventful until today.”
“What made today different.”
“Gypsy Rose asked me out and I said yes.” I blurted.
His eyes grew wide as silence echoed off the pristine walls.I sat waiting for him to say something. Anything. I guess he was waiting for me to say more. Or he choked on his tongue and couldn’t speak.
“I am sorry. I never saw that coming.” He takes a long drink of what he makes us think is water. I sometimes wonder if its Vodka or Gin.
I’m hurt that he finds it so shocking Gypsy Rose would ask me out. But then again I had the same reaction when she did.
“I think its great progress that you are making.”
Now its my turn to look surprised.
“Progress?”
“Yes. That you are planning to go out with Gypsy Rose.”
“Oh no! I need you to help me figure how to get out of this! It was an accident. She asked me out. I was in another world when I said I’d love to and I guess I was speaking out loud.” I take a deep breath. Now he looks amused. The Lamarr I am used to.
The panic wells in my chest.
“Calm down Frank. Deep breaths. Now.” He leans back folding both hands on his desk. “Do you like Gypsy Rose?”
“I find her attractive. The times I have spoken to her she is very nice. She doesn’t look at me like I’m a circus oddity. Other than that and gossip I don’t really know her.”
“Then what better way to get to know her than to go on a date?”
“You know I can’t. The thought of hand holding is scary enough but to think of kissing or…or.” I begin panicking again. He holds up a big hand
“You are jumping ahead of yourself. First of all, a date doesn’t have to include any of the things you mentioned. What to do you plan to do?”
“I didn’t plan anything. She asked me. I planned to not go.”
“Deep down, do you want to go?”
“No!” I nod.

Snippet Sunday

Hi, Y’all! It’s time for Snippet Sunday again. It’s February and what better time for a sweet contemporary romance?

This week  I introduce Gypsy Rose’s mom and more than one decision Gypsy Rose needs to make.

This is a rough draft and the only eyes on it has been mine… so remember this is a diamond in the rough please be kind.

I finish putting the new stuff out on display when mom comes in. I’m glad to see her. She comes in most days but what time she shows up is a crap shoot. When she is off exploring with Ebby my niece picks up the slack if she isn’t tied up with cheer-leading or whatever teenage girls have going on these days. My mind clouds up when I remember my life at her age.
“Dollar for your thoughts.” My mom’s cheery voice snaps me back to the present.
“I think that’s a penny mom.” I chuckle.
“A penny doesn’t even buy a piece of bubble gum anymore so I figure your thoughts should be worth at least a dollar.” She pulls me into a big hug. I’m thankful she is a tiny woman or she might suffocate me with those tight hugs.
“Whats wrong sweetie?”
“All is good mom. I have a date tonight and was wondering if you would be in today or if I needed to call Whippoorwill. With my luck you wouldn’t be here and she would be off doing whatever it is she is into this week.”
“I see, then you remembered what you were doing at her age and that’s why the sad look.”
I look quickly away and hope we don’t go into her thoughts on that again. I really want to talk about my date, she will have some good ideas I’m sure. I turn to see her colorful skirt disappearing into the back. I take of to catch her. “Wait mom!”
“I thought I’d bake you a batch of those chocolate rolls you like so much. Those always make you feel better.”
“MMM Ok. When you come back down I want to talk about this date. I told him I would show him around town. I have no idea what he likes or doesn’t like. Should I take him out or take him to dinner at my place or what? I’ve never been the one to ask a guy out first.”
“I see it’s not with Ray or you wouldn’t be asking any of these questions. Sounds like someone new in town. Who is it sweetie.”
“Frank the new man at the bank.”
“Really? He is a bit of an oddity around here. Seems friendly but from what I hear he is a loner, never goes out or anything.” She stops moving and taps her chin with a long red nail. “ Elsie, one of the tellers at the bank told us the other night at bingo she has invited him over a few times to dinner or out to bingo and he always has an excuse. She says he usually eats his lunch in his office and rarely sits in the lounge room. She also said she sees him clean his desk every time a client leaves and she thinks he uses a bottle of sanitizer a day.”
“Mom I doubt anyone can use a whole bottle of that a day. The ones the bank has are huge. Besides Elsie is a busybody and a nag. No wonder he turned her down. She’s enough to scare anyone off.”
“She’s not the only one that says that kind of stuff about him. Everything I hear makes him sound like one of those Germiphobes.”
“Well that’s good to know. I’ll keep that in mind while planning.Any suggestions on what to do?”
“Let me think about it while I’m cooking your chocolate rolls. Though you can rule out taking him to your place.”
“My place isn’t that dirty mom.” I roll my eyes like a teenager. Then I remember I worked all night and the house isn’t as clean as usual.
“I wasn’t exactly thinking about neatness.” She shot me an odd look.
I nibble my nails trying to figure out what she is talking about.
“Your problem is over 6 foot tall and even though he has his own place seems to stay at yours.” She smacks my hand from my mouth. “You better not do that around your new man if he has germ issues.”
“He’s not my new man. Yet.” I let out an exasperated puff of air. ” Yeah I am going to have to have a talk with Ray.” I know she is right. Mothers are always right. Or that’s what I have always been told.

I hope you are enjoying this story and will come back next for more Sweet Gypsy Rose.

#snippetsunday~~A touchy situation

Snippet Sunday

Hi, Y’all! It’s time for Snippet Sunday again.  I am continuing with my sweet contemporary romance Sweet Gypsy Rose. over the past few weeks, you have met the main Characters, Gypsy Rose, Frank, and Ray. This week I am doing something very different. Since this is a first draft I add notes to myself. I left these notes in this snippet.  Feel free to answer one or all of the questions I posed to myself.

This is a rough draft and the only eyes on it has been mine… so remember this is a diamond in the rough.

Sweet Gypsy Rose copyright 2014

Of all the women in the world why would God choose this one for me. For heaven’s sake I’m 39, have only kissed a girl once and hated it, a loner, and have a serious case of OCD. This woman is my polar opposite. She is an open book to the public, friendly, charming outgoing, seems to volunteer and participate in everything. Oh yeah! I almost forgot. She is drop dead gorgeous in an outlandish way. She makes me think of a cross between Madonna with an overdose of Cher tossed in for good measure.
This has to be a cruel trick of fate. I’ve never been interested in a woman since my fateful prom night and now I eat, breathe and sleep this woman. I can’t get her out of my mind.
When she walked in the door today, my first instinct was to run to the bathroom to hide. That didn’t happen. I was waylaid by the teller manager on the way (find out what this is called) to relieve one of the ladies who needed to take her daughter to the doctor. I quickly took care of my business, washed my hands till they were pink from the hot water( is this necessary or should I leave it out.) and ducked into the lounge to grab an extra bottle of sanitizer from my locker. I didn’t want to take a chance on that booth being out. Besides I prefer my own brand with a moisturizer in it, not the generic stuff the bank has.
I look longingly at my office across the floor wishing I was in there hiding under my desk. Her beautiful face lights up with the most radiant smile as our eyes meet. She speaks to everyone she passes as she looks the lines over(do I need something else here something like she is sizing up the situation), stopping to hug, shake hands or even kiss a few on the cheek. She greets everyone by name, asking about their family. I think she knows everyone in town on a personal level.
My hands shake. I hoped she won’t choose my line. I probably won’t have to worry. She may have a favorite teller, most people do. Thankfully by the time she is done with her meet and greet my line has become longer than the others. My heart begins to somersault as I look up and see her standing at the end. Oh shit!(should I leave out?) What do I do? I’m trapped behind this counter with no choice but to face both my biggest fear and my fantasy all in one fell swoop.
“Hello, Ms.Ceely what can I do for you today.” (Do I need something here?)
“Oh Mr. Taylor I bet you could do lots for me.” She winks. The pretty woman actually winks at me. No denying she is flirting with me. Me. Plain, Mr. Invisible me. “Call me Gypsy Rose. I’d say Ms. Ceely is my mom but she might smack you for calling her that. You’d be safe calling Gram Ms. Ceely the first time you meet her. If she likes you she will tell you to call her Grams, if she doesn’t, it’s best to avoid her like the plague.” She shoots me a precocious smile. I’m doomed. I stand there frozen in place as she extends a hand to me. I feel like an idiot. I’ve wanted to touch her ever since I saw her, but she has touched every person in this room. I can feel my body trembling as I slowly reach out. I glance at the Hand sanitizer. She follows my gaze, reaches out, sanitizes her hands, re-extending it to me. Her hand is so small and soft. I actually like the feel of it.

I hope you are enjoying this story and will come back next week  to see what Gypsy Rose is up to.

Snippet Sunday~~ Sweet and Spicy~~No not the latte

Snippet Sunday

Hi, Y’all! It’s time for Snippet Sunday again. Time to start the year off on a lighthearted, funny note.  Sweet Gypsy Rose is  a story I began in fall of 2014 after a visit to my dads. I loved the delightful tourist town and decided to make my own.  Riverton was born. Then I got sidetracked along the way with sickness and lots of family issues.

This year I plan to get a few stories written then decide which path to go on.  For those of you looking for a lighter, humorous story with a free-spirited female lead and a sexy banker that has no idea his potential, toss in a very hunky ex-boyfriend that won’t let go and a secret past, I present… Sweet Gypsy Rose… oh and don’t forget you cat lovers!

This is a rough draft and the only eyes on it has been mine… so remember this is a diamond in the rough.

“Ouch” I shout a bit too loud as a pop to my derriere propels me forward bumping my head into the glass case.

As I jerk, upright I find myself against a big bulky body. Definitely not my banker. I don’t have to turn around to see who it is since I’ve been up-close and personal to the body enough to know every dip, curve, and bulge. Especially the one growing bigger and harder against my back.

“Raymond, what are you doing?” I try to tone down my anger at being interrupted in my little display of seduction.

“I was wondering the same thing about you, sweetheart. The last time I heard you moan like that you had your mouth wrapped…” the rest comes out mumbled as I press my hand against his mouth, none too gently. Though most of the town knows about mine and Raymond’s odd relationship, I’m hoping the new man in town doesn’t.

“What are you doing in here Gypsy Rose? You told me you were going straight to work this morning? That’s why I’m here in case you were wondering since you didn’t fix breakfast. What ya want and I’ll get in line and order.”

What I wanted was Ray to leave so I could see if the new man was going to sit in here and have his coffee or take it to work with him. Maybe even see if he ordered something to eat so I would know something he liked. I tell Ray to get me the vegan banana nut muffin and my usual large buttered pecan mocha latte with soy milk. At least, I don’t have to pay for my breakfast today.

Uh oh! Looks like there may be a complication in Gypsy Rose’s plans in the form of her ex-boyfriend Raymond Patterson.

I hope you are enjoying this story and will come back next week.  If you missed meeting Gypsy Rose week one you can catch up here.  http://cathybrockman.com/2016/01/10/snippetsunday-sweet-and-funny-time/ ‎

From chapter one — Meet Gypsy Rose

I’m so excited, my adrenaline seems to be in overdrive. That’s not a bad thing. Since I’ll be out tomorrow night, I decide to make some soap, candle waxes and potpourri pies for the shop. I have lots of herbs in the back garden to use up before the frost hits. I gather the lavender, some sage, and rose-hips. I have a few roses, so I decide to take those in too.
The rose hip and blackberry sage teas are two of my biggest sellers. I need to hurry up and use the basil, thyme, and oregano too. Perhaps one day this weekend. I never thought about having a man in my life, other than Ray that is and he’s more like a big child or brother to take care of not a boyfriend. That boat sailed years ago. If only I can convince him of that things will be so much better. Perhaps if things work out with Frank, Ray will finally move on.
A creamy blur attacks my leg, swirling around it like a whirlpool. I nearly fall.
“Daisy! What have I told you about that. You nearly made me fall.”
A nip and meow is all the answer I get. I bend down and scoop the big, fat cat into my arms and rub her nose with mine.
“If I break my arms you won’t get fed so stop running up on me like that in the garden.” I set her down and pick up my baskets of goodies. She follows me into the trailer.
I love my home. It may not look like much, but it suits me. I live in a double wide mobile home that sits at the edge of a large, woodsy campground owned by my mom’s boyfriend and Ray’s dad, Ebeneezer Patterson. My family history is complicated, but I live as simply as I can. I feel at home surrounded by nature, and I help Ray and Ebby run the campgrounds. I am mostly the hostess and help mom with the book keeping.
I do craft workshops in the afternoons on weekends for kids, well used to be kids but now mom’s and some dad’s want to join so it’s just a workshop for anyone wanting to join. I give lessons at the shop also both group classes and private ones. I enjoy them, but I stay busy from morning till bedtime. The downside is the classes are my only social life. I’ve met a few men but once they find how odd my life and extended family are they head for the hills.
I feed Daisy and make myself a snack of goat cheese and fresh fig preserves while assembling my stuff to get to work. I find it goes much smoother this way. As the ingredients cook and the jars boil, I do a quick sweep of the house. When the soaps and waxes are set to cool, the teas bagged, and a batch of jam is processed I take a quick shower wash my hair, and head to bed. I’m so tired that I don’t even pull out my Kindle to read. I close my eyes and think of Frank Taylor. He reminds me a bit of George Clooney except Frank’s hair isn’t as gray. But those eyes are. I’ve never seen eyes like his. Deepest n his handsome face and the color of steel. I bet he is younger than he appears. His face is so full of tension, and he looks sad even when he smiles. I’ve watched him since he moved to town. He has a very set routine and doesn’t get out much.If he did, I would have heard about it by now. The gossip is he works and goes home. No-one has seen him out other than the bank, the coffee shop and one small cafe on our strip. I hope soon I will give them something new to talk about.

I hope you are enjoying this story and will come back next week and meet Frank, Gypsy roses love interest.
