Cat’s Meow~Drama Cruise~Nicky & Noah Mysteries~Joe Cosentino

HOLIDAYS ARE THE BEST TIME FOR A CRUISE

Nicky and Noah mystery book three: Drama Cruise, by Joe Cosentino, published by Lethe Press

The middle of December means the start of winter break for those of us who live in the world of academia. With a month off, I had cold cabin fever and wanted to get away. My spouse’s family had taken a ten-day cruise to Alaska and recommended it to us. As Nicky in my Nicky and Noah mystery novels would say, “My heart was pounding like a hooker’s pelvis.” Prone to motion sickness, I had never taken a cruise, and I was shaking like a life preserver in a storm. I packed my ginger capsules and grumbling stomach (and mouth) and we were off.

To my relief, the boat rocked a bit but not enough for motion sickness. We did have one comical episode in a yoga class when we fell over doing the tree pose. However, we also had amazing meals aplenty, gorgeous ocean views, a tail-waving whale, and a fun helicopter ride to the glaciers. We also embarked on land excursions to a tramway over the mountains, a totem pole park, a log climbers’ show, a frontier habitat, and a Native American village. Our cabin sported a private balcony and a gay porter who seemed excited to find a gay couple onboard ship. Onboard ship we raised our noses at an art show, played bingo like senior citizens on church night, gambled like card sharks at the casino, and saw a musical revue with singing and dancing cupcakes. When we returned home, I decided to immortalize our trip by setting the third Nicky and Noah mystery onboard a cruise to Alaska.

Not familiar with the Nicky and Noah mysteries? If you haven’t read Drama Queen (Divine Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award for Best Mystery, Best Crime, Best Humorous, Best Contemporary novel of 2015) and Drama Muscle (Rainbow Award Honorable Mention) published by Lethe Press, you should! It is a gay cozy mystery comedy series, meaning the setting is warm and cozy, the clues and murders (and laughs) come fast and furious, there are enough plot twists and turns and a surprise ending to keep the pages turning, and at the center is a touching gay romance between Associate Professor of Directing Nicky Abbondanza and Assistant Professor of Acting Noah Oliver at fictitious Treemeadow College (started by a gay couple, Tree and Meadow) in Vermont. Along the way, Nicky and Noah fall in love, as I’ve heard the readers fall in love with them.

In Drama Cruise it is summer on a ten-day cruise from San Francisco to Alaska and back. Nicky and Noah must figure out why college theatre professors are dropping like life rafts as Nicky directs a murder mystery dinner theatre show onboard ship starring Noah and other college theatre professors from across the US. Complicating matters are their both sets of wacky parents who want to embark on all the activities on and off the boat with the handsome couple. Martin Anderson (Nicky and Noah’s department head) and his bickering husband are also along for the rocky ride. As in the first two books, there are a slew of colorful, hysterically funny victims and suspects like the cruise director who talks endlessly about her glory days as a theatre major in college, the ship’s doctor who is looking for the secret of life, Nicky and Noah’s porter who wants them to adopt him, and the captain of the boat who insists he has seen the ghost of his former sea captain. The theatre professors are equally as colorful, including an alcoholic who believes he has seen a mermaid, a hypochondriac looking for love, a comic with a cat of nine tails in her closet, and a Shakespearian actor who can’t keep his hands off his volume of the Bard—or off anyone else. And who is the mysterious Professor Nan Joy Hassahl?

Further complicating matters are Nicky’s and Noah’s parents as surprise cruise passengers, and Nicky’s assignment to direct a murder mystery dinner theater show onboard ship.  MY REVIEW

You can tell by the cover that this is going to be another fun adventure with Nicky and Noah. If you haven’t read any of the other Nicky and Noah mysteries, that’s Ok these stand alone well. In this, the third book in the series, Nicky, and Noah are on a cruise. They have been chosen to put on a mystery dinner the last night of the cruise. But at the rate the actors keep dropping dead, there may not be anyone left to put on the play.

We also get Nicky, and Noah’s parents on the cruise and they are as funny as Professor Martin and his husband, Rubin.Nicky and Noah’s parents are constantly bickering over who is going to do what, planning their sons’ wedding. So between, the murder mystery and the humor this book has it all. The mystery is another that isn’t easy to solve, just when you think you have that one may drop dead. There is sweet romance between Nicky and Noah, but the sex is off the page.If you are looking for a good, funny book to shake the blahs, love mystery, humor and romance and a story with a twist or two you’re bound to love this.

“This is a wonderful addition to the series! I fell in love with Nicky in the first book and he just gets better. Filled with humor and action. Noah evolves in this story, his character grows into a more mature yet still adorable sidekick to Nicky. They are perfect together, in detective work and in family situations. I hope that there are more to follow.” Crystals Many Reviewers

“This book is a comic romp that simultaneously celebrates and lampoons a mash-up of genres: the bloodless murders (in this case six) of Agatha Christie and her ilk, the screwball movie mysteries of Nick and Norah Charles (it’s Nick and Noah here), and the simile-rich voice-overs of film noir– all updated for a gay context.” Elisa Rainbow, Rainbow Awards

I AM THANKFUL FOR…

 by JOE COSENTINO

author of RAG DOLL, the fifth Jana Lane mystery, published by The Wild Rose Press

I am so thankful for everyone who has and currently is supporting my creative efforts. To start, a big thank you to my family and early neighbors who were captive audiences to my childhood shows that included a Nativity play in my cousin’s garage, a one-man show with me waving a hat and cane, and full scale musicals in a neighbor’s garage starring my sister and me wearing our parents clothing. Of course a huge thank you also to my spouse who is my partner in all things, including editing my books!

Next, a big thank you to my professors in college who complimented and gently critiqued my acting in college mainstage and classroom productions. As a college professor/department head now, I try to give back by helping my students find their special talents and believing in them.

Thank you to the many actors I worked with like Bruce Willis, Nathan Lane, Rosie O’Donnell, Holland Taylor, and Jason Robards who recommended that I further explore my creative gene. And to my then manager who further nudged me to give writing a try. A big thank you to the audiences of my plays, who laughed, cried, and cheered at my words.

A huge, heartfelt thank you to the readers of my novels who tell me they love the humor, drama, plot twists and turns, romance, mystery, and surprise endings in my books, including begging for more!

Finally, a big kudos to the reviewers and other writers, like Cathy Brockman, who have supported me from the beginning and continue to read and review my books.

I hope each of you is thankful for something this month, and that the people around you support and cheer on your unique you.

Here is a little snippet of Rag Doll

Jana and Bove did the scene again with a thin piece of gauze over the camera lens aimed at Jana.

Ah, the plight of a middle-aged actress.

Jana felt even better about that take. Their relationship worked, and the energy bounced back and forth between them almost effortlessly. Again Jana wondered what it would be like sharing her days with Bove and kissing Bove in bed before sleep each night.

Herm’s call for action brought Jana back to the scene. Bove’s close-up was even better than the first two takes. It was as if they had been married for years with an easygoing yet emotional rapport.

“Cut!”

“Good job, partner.”

Bove smiled at Jana. “Right back at you.”

As she started to rise from the bed, Jana spotted Christa in the distance with a look of horror on her face.

The young woman screamed as a lighting screen headed straight for her. Stu Silverman, standing next to Christa, noticed and pushed Christa out of the way in

the nick of time. The screen crashed to the floor inches away from Christa’s feet. Standing on the other side of her, Andrew Bianca took his wife in his arms, and she

wept on his shoulder.

Bove whispered to Jana, “Here we go again.”

MY REVIEW

5 Meows

Rag Doll is the 5th Jana Lane Mystery. It stands alone well. Jana is a middle-aged child star that has just gotten back into her career. After two movies and a Broadway play, she is now doing a TV series. Her youngest son B.J. who was in the Broadway play with her has a part as well. Jana is also hiring a new Nanny for B.J. On set she meets her guest star Christa, Christa’s agent Stu. Her husband Andrew and her Uncle Nick an older, havewashed-up, alcoholic star. There is also two couples, and her on-stage husband Bove and his wife or should I say soon to be ex-wife Karen. There is also the director, a makeup woman and a props manager.  Each of these characthaseither a charming or mysterious personality. I forgot Jana’s agent Simon. He is hilarious. also flamboyant and colorful. Literally.

The plot of the story is similar to the other books. Once Jana signs on for a job she begins having nightmares. People on the set start dropping dead and she finds clues  until she solves the case.

The mystery itself is always good. Just when you are sure you know who did it they drop dead or something else happens to change your mind. Again…I was wrong and shocked at the outcome.

There is also  usually a subplot with Jana helping the LGBT community. This time her project turns out to be AIDS awareness. There is also a little about Breast cancer as well. I love how the author takes causes and integrates them into the story with things to help us learn about them.

The story is a mystery, but Joe has a way with humor that keeps it light-hearted and funny, even though at times there are some deep issues like the AIDs.

I love a good mystery/suspense and also a good comedy and Joe has a magical way of weaving them together into the perfect blend.

If you like colorful characters, mystery/suspense, cozies, humor, attention to detail, and cute kids (B.J. is stealing the show!) This book is for you.

Cat's Meow Reviews That purr books

New York City in June

Joe Cosentino

June is my favorite month! As a college professor, that is my vacation month so my spouse and I often take the train to New York City and visit museums, department store windows, Broadway shows, Central Park, and old friends. So it isn’t a coincidence that each of my Jana Lane mystery novels takes place in the month of June, and CHINA DOLL takes place in New York City.

As a child I loved child stars like Shirley Temple, Hayley Mills, and Patty Duke, seeing their movies over and over. So I created a heroine who was the biggest child star ever until she was attacked on the studio lot at eighteen years old. In PAPER DOLL Jana at thirty-eight lives with her family in a mansion in picturesque Hudson Valley, New York. Her flashbacks from the past become murder attempts in her future. Forced to summon up the lost courage she had as a child, Jana ventures back to Hollywood, which helps her uncover a web of secrets about everyone she loves. She also embarks on a romance with the devilishly handsome son of her old producer, Rocco Cavoto. As noted in the novel in Jana’s garden on her vast property, June in the Hudson Valley of New York brings various flowers to life including blue periwinkles, golden iris, pink magnolia, and white bridal reef that lead to a scented path of magenta lilacs quivering in the light breeze. When venturing to LA, Jana and Rocco enjoy a dip in the ocean and the sight of palm trees waving at Jana’s return.

In PORCELAIN DOLL (The Wild Rose Press), Jana makes a comeback film and uncovers who is being murdered on the set and why. Her heart is set aflutter by her incredibly gorgeous co-star, America’s heartthrob Jason Apollo. The other suspects include Jana’s James Dean type young co-star, her older John Wayne type co-star, her children’s Eve Harrington type nanny, the film’s gossipy makeup and hair artist, a local reverend trying to stop the film’s production, and Jason’s agent. Again it is June on Jana’s property, which overlooks the majestic Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River’s twinkling antics in the sun.

In SATIN DOLL (The Wild Rose Press), Jana and family head to Washington, DC, where Jana plays a US senator in a new film, and becomes embroiled in a murder and corruption at the senate chamber. She also embarks on a romance with Chris Bruno, the muscular detective. Jana rubs elbows with senators on both sides of the aisle, a lobbyist, and a Washington reporter. Her husband also goes through a personal crisis. While cherry blossoms are no longer out in Washington, DC in June, Jana and family enjoy sights like the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Capitol, and the Ford’s Theatre in the gorgeous June weather.

In CHINA DOLL (current release from The Wild Rose Press), after winning an Academy Award Jana is offered the leading role in a Broadway mystery. It is old home week and nepotism in action as the play is produced and written by the same producer (Stanley Rothman) and author (Katrina Wright) who produced and wrote Jana’s first Broadway play when she was five years old, Sweet Nothings. Jana’s co-star from Sweet Nothings, the aging but still gorgeous and mysterious Savannah Stevens, is co-starring in China Doll, along with Savannah’s incredibly handsome and muscular son, Peter Stevens, in his Broadway debut. Rounding out the cast are Rothman’s granddaughter Bella, Jana’s nephew Brad, and Jana’s youngest son B.J. And the play is directed by Katrina’s new and much younger husband, the studly Tony Cuccioli. Also in the cast are Sally Chen a recent Tony Award winning actress, and Tate Moonglow a transplant from Off-Broadway. In the mystery play within the mystery novel, Sally plays a young Chinese heiress who dies mysteriously. The suspects are Sally’s impoverished new husband (Tate), his ex-girlfriend (Bella), and their neighbors (Brad and Savannah). Jana plays the neighbor/amateur sleuth who figures out whodunit and why, and Peter takes on the role of the detective who entices her personally and professionally. Attractions come to the surface between Tony and Sally, Brad and Bella, Tate and Gary (B.J.’s new nanny), and even Jana and Peter. Art imitates life as members of the production team of China Doll are murdered, personal secrets are revealed, and Jana once again uses the skills she learned as a child star to solve the crime. Also, Jana and her husband go through a personal crisis, however, her son B.J. is bitten by the acting bug and has the time of his life.

There’s nothing like June in New York City. Though CHINA DOLL is a fictitious play, I was able to place the theatre between the marquees of real shows playing on Broadway at the time: Hurlyburly starring William Hurt and Christopher Walken and The Rink starring Chita Rivera and Liza Minelli. Jana and Peter take a carriage ride through the city and the park. I was also able to include their luxury hotel, Washington Square Park, Little Italy, and of course the theatre district.

Each Jana Lane mystery is it’s own story. The clues are there, and so are the plot twists and turns, and white knuckle shocking ending. And don’t miss the next Jana Lane mystery, RAG DOLL, releasing from The Wild Rose Press in a few months, where Jana stars in a television murder mystery show and once again life imitates art. Again, it takes place in June!

The curtain is going up. So curl up with CHINA DOLL, a Jana Lane mystery, and let me know what you think. I love hearing from readers. You can contact me at: http://www.JoeCosentino.weebly.com.

Jana Lane is back on Broadway in 1984—starring in a murder mystery. Life imitates art when members of the company are murdered. As Jana investigates, it’s clear she may be the next victim. Complicating matters is Jana’s uncontrollable infatuation with her leading man, gorgeous and muscular Off-Broadway actor Peter Stevens. Will Jana find the murderer before the curtain comes down on her?

A little more China Doll

Jana came face to face with Stanley. “If Tate and Gary go, so do I.”

“Don’t do it for me, Jana,” Tate and Gary said in unison.

Stanley grinned. “Listen to your deviant friends, Jana.”

Tate held Jana’s arm to stifle her from replying to Stanley.

Stanley glared at Sally Chen. “And if anyone doesn’t like the size of her role, I’ll accept your resignation.” Then staring at Savannah and Jana, he said, “And if any of you regrets signing a contract with me for this show, let this be a business lesson for you. Lawyers enforce contracts.” Stanley clapped his hands again. “Tony, Tate, and Gary, you are released. Kat, please take a seat in the house. Jose, back to your stage manager’s console please. Everyone else, please make a circle around me, and I will lead you in some acting exercises.”

As everyone moved around Stanley onstage in a state of shocked pandemonium, the bookcase set piece teetered back and forth then crashed down on top of the producer.

My Review

5 meows 0  purrs ( no sexual content)

Jana Lane everyone’s favorite child star is now back on Broadway where she began at age five after two comeback movies, one which she earned an Oscar. She is bringing along her youngest son who also gets his first acting part as well as her nephew. It seems as murder and mayhem follow n Jana’s footsteps as The members of the play start dropping dead leaving Jana falling back on her skills and helping to solve the murders.

Each one of these stories gets better and better.  I think little B. J nearly stole the show  here. He added  a touch more comedy  and also helped endear us even more to Jana. I love how  there is practically no way to solve these crimes  as the twists come and come.

If you like sweet stories set in the 1980’s,  Mystery/ suspense/ cozy with lots of twists and lots of humor and cute kids this is definitely for you

this is a book  in a series but they all stand alone. They are so good I do recommend them all though!

Cat’s Meow~~Reviews That Purr~~Moving Forward~~Cozzi Cove2 By Joe Cosentino #favoriteauthors #hotsummerread

May is Time to Head for the Beach!

My family lived in the city but spent our summers at the New Jersey Shore. We swam and made sandcastles at the beach, waded in the bay, played miniature golf, ate salt water taffy and jumped up and down on trampolines until we (literally) saw green, and dined with our parents at our favorite seafood restaurant with a colorful player piano. All those places and experiences are in the novels set in a fictitious place I call Cozzi Cove, a gay resort of eight bungalows in a private cove on the Jersey Shore. Each bungalow is based on my aunt and uncle’s, and is furnished with hand-carved nautical furnishings, and has a stunning view of the bay and lighthouse in the distance. The main beach and boardwalk are only a mile away. It’s a place I love to visit in my head, and I know you will too.

The bungalows on Cozzi Cove are set on a stretch of cove formed when softer rocks were worn away by the sun and salty water faster than the harder rocks surrounding them. This created a gorgeous bay of turquoise water shielded by large rocks in the distance and smaller rocks near the water’s edge.

After Cozzi Cove: Bouncing Back released, many readers and reviewers praised its romantic, humorous, dramatic, mysterious style, and interwoven captivating stories. It was voted March’s Book of the Month on the TBR Pile! Having received countless requests for another visit to Cozzi Cove, I wrote Cozzi Cove: Moving Forward. As with the first book, nothing is what it seems in book two, and romance is everywhere.

My leading character is Cal Cozzi.  Cal, short for Calvin, is thirty years old, tall, and muscular. His Italian and Scottish heritage left him with striking auburn hair and a strong nose. He dabbled as a professional football player then restaurant owner, but neither was a good fit. After Cal’s parents died in an automobile accident, he found his calling: managing Cozzi Cove in the New Jersey shore town named after his great-grandfather. Sensing Cal’s sexual orientation as a boy, Cal’s father had turned Cozzi Cove into a gay resort. Cal is honored to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Cal’s new young lover, Michael Rodgers, is an African American college student with exotic eyes and a toned body. After going through tough times, Michael landed at Cal’s doorstep and the two have never looked back.

Connor, the college student assisting Cal, is packed with muscles and hormones. He revels in Cozzi Cove, and in checking out each resident for a possible fling on the cove—which he occasionally enjoys.

Tommy, the bald, muscular, tattooed resident of Cozzi Cove who owns the local bar has held a torch for Cal since high school. Carla Mangione who runs Carla’s Seafood Restaurant holds a similar torch for Cal’s sister.

Cal’s sister, Taylor, drops in from Rome, Paris, Wall Street, or Palm Springs. As a tough as nails top one-percenter, the world revolves around her, which makes her hysterically funny. I also admire her devotion to her brother. Taylor is in for a huge surprise in this book.

This summer the vacationers include Rodney Maxwell and Dennis O’Halloran, a Tony Award winning actor and his estranged producer/husband with their two hired bodybuilder studs, Jarek and Zeus. Computer analyst, Sam, enlists his best friend Chase in a scheme to attract Sam’s hunky, unsuspecting best friend, Raul. Hunter, a female gay romance novel enthusiast, hoping to experience gay life off the page. Middle aged Gil Van Truren wants to end it all—until he sees a vision of his first love from college. Cal also has his hands full with Michael’s study buddy the gorgeous and muscular Carlo, and resident man of mystery George Valis who seems to know a great deal about Cal’s past. What secrets, humor, tragedy, mysteries, and passions lie in the magical place called Cozzi Cove this summer?

I can also see COZZI COVE as a television series. Make me an offer, producers!

I love hearing from readers. Please contact me at: http://www.JoeCosentino.weebly.com.

So grab your Speedos, suntan lotion, and shades and head back to Cozzi Cove. I hope to see you there again. Cal has a bungalow waiting for you!

MY REVIEW

5 meows 3 purrs (some sex)

In the magical world of Cozzi Cove, a vacation paradise for gay men in a very gay-friendly town anything and everything can happen. It isn’t all sweetness though. There is jealousy, heartache, illness, lost love, new love, broken relationships, and of course some hot man-sex.

With seven bungalows there are guests of all sorts. This time, we even have a cute female that wants to live in the world of her romance novels. There are secrets to reveal, tension in Cal and Michael’s relationship, and of course Connor for a bit of humor. One of the guests comes to end it all after the loss of his husband and being fired for being gay and finding out he has Parkinson until he sees his first love swimming nude in the Cove at night…just like he was in College.

Moving forward is like eight mini stories in one and each is as good as a full story. Plus we have the townspeople as well. Lots of fabulous characters of all persuasions. The story is so fast-paced and engrossing that it’s over before you know it and  makes you want more.

If you like interracial romance, angst, a touch of humor, jealousy, personal trainers, architects, beach resorts and lots of sexy men you will love this story.

A little more Cozzi Cove Moving Foreward

Excerpt of Cozzi Cove: Moving Forward by Joe Cosentino published by NineStar Press

Cal Cozzi sat on the white sandy beach like a king on his throne. The thirty-one-year-old thought about his great-grandfather, Calvin Cozzi III, who had built the eight bungalows, seven of which Cal’s father, Calvin Cozzi II, had rented to guys like Cal when Cal was a boy. With both men long gone, Cozzi Cove was Cal’s heritage, lifeblood, and oasis. As he gazed out at the ancient lighthouse near the horizon, Cal filled his lungs with salty sea air. He was happy to be home.

A familiar yawn and warm breath on his neck caused Cal to turn around and throw his arms around the stocky young man who plopped down next to him. Over a decade younger than Cal, Michael Rodgers rubbed his fingers over dark eyes. Resting his head with its chestnut-colored locks on Cal’s chest, Michael said, “I missed waking up in your arms.”

They shared a long kiss and then rose and stood at the water’s edge, watching the seagulls fly across shades of amber, violet, and flame that were fading to reveal a bright-blue sky. With Cal’s Italian and Scottish heritage and Michael’s Swedish and African lineage, Cal thought their skin glistened in the sun like jewels.

Shorter than Cal, Michael licked Cal’s neck.

“Hey, stop licking. I don’t have any pets.”

“You do now.”

Cal took the boy in his arms and smothered his youthful face with kisses. Though Cal would never forget Lance, the soul mate he’d lost to cancer two years prior, he couldn’t escape the fact that he was growing more and more in love with Michael every day they lived together. Michael’s high-energy zest for life and brutal honesty in speaking his mind both infuriated and delighted Cal. And Cal was well aware that his straightforward, hardworking masculinity still made Michael weak at the knees after living together in the main bungalow for nearly a year.

“Let’s get some breakfast.” Cal ran his fingers through Michael’s curly hair.

Michael kneaded the muscles in Cal’s back. “What are we having?”

“I’m having the honey buckwheat pancakes I made. What are you having?” Cal slapped Michael’s firm buttocks playfully, and then ran away as Michael chased him, laughing.

As they headed for the main bungalow, Cal scanned the row of seven guest bungalows on the cove. Cozzi Cove itself was a quiet stretch of beach with waves tickling jagged rocks perched on white sand only a mile away from the open ocean. Though he was excited about the start of the summer rental season, Cal knew he’d miss the tranquility of having the cove to himself—with Michael.

Michael followed Cal into the kitchen. As Cal gazed at the lantern-shaped kitchen clock on the wall, he admired his grandfather’s taste in decorating all of the bungalows with wood-carved, nautical-themed furnishings.

Sitting at the table, Michael said, “When do the guests arrive?”

“Check-in starts at eleven a.m.”

Michael giggled. “Do I have to check in?”

Cal kissed the top of his head. “Yeah, into my bedroom.” He served the pancakes and orange juice before sitting next to Michael. “What time do you have to leave for school?”

Michael answered with his mouth full. “College! I’m taking a summer class at State, not going to morning kindergarten. I’m a junior.”

“Okay, Junior.”

“Very funny. In the fall I’ll be a senior, like you.” He kissed Cal’s wide nose.

“Hey, your lips are covered in honey.”

“So they tell me.” Michael continued eating.

“Does your study buddy tell you that?”

Michael raised his eyes to the mermaid-shaped lighting fixture as if gathering patience. “Carlo is my partner.”

“Really?”

“In my advanced photography class.”

“Is that what they call it at State?”

“Maybe in your day.” Michael’s eyes gleamed devilishly. “Hey, did they have college back then?”

“I’ll put you over my knee, young man.”

“Promises, promises.” Michael swallowed his last piece of pancake and then gulped down the rest of his orange juice. “Carlo is coming here before our class. We’re taking some shots of the cove.”

Cal felt his expression harden. “I thought you were going to mow the lawn, rake the pebbles, and hose down the sidewalk around the bungalows.”

“Done.” Michael put his plate, glass, and fork in the sink.

“When?”

“Last night, when you were in the shower.”

“That’s why you didn’t come in with me.”

Michael wrapped his arms around Cal. “Can I take a rain check for tonight?”

“Maybe you should ask Carlo.”

“Carlo doesn’t shower. He takes baths.”

Cal did a double take. “And you know this how?”

“He told me.” Michael ran into the back bedroom, the home of his computer and photography equipment.

Cal felt his blood boil. Taking in some deep breaths, he told himself to calm down.

Michael came back holding a number of prints and placed them on the kitchen table. “What do you think?”

Cal looked down at photographs. “Nice composition, proportions, and shading.”

“Thanks!”

He pointed at the dark-haired, dark-eyed, olive-skinned, very muscular young man with a stoic Roman nose, dimples like craters, and a cleft chin like the San Andreas Fault. “Your professor brought in an Italian porn star?”

“Watch many Italian porn films, do you, Cal?”

“Obviously you don’t have to.”

“That’s Carlo. I took them in class.”

Cal offered a weak smile, trying hard not to let the anger and jealously he was feeling show on his face.

Michael ran his finger over the photographs. “Our professor complimented me on the line and shape.”

“I can see why.”

“And the contour and shading.”

“Yup.”

“I’m really proud of them. Tommy loved them too.”

Cal rose and put his breakfast things in the sink. “When did you show these to Tommy?”

“Yesterday afternoon when I was working at Tommy’s bar. The pictures of Cozzi Cove are for our next assignment.”

“‘Hot Italian guy on the beach’?”

“‘Summer magic.’ ” He hugged Cal’s neck. “And there’s no place more magical or more romantic than Cozzi Cove in the summer.”

After Michael headed into the bathroom, Cal heard Connor’s jeep pull up into the parking lot.

A minute later, Connor’s voice rang out. “Hi, boss. Private Connor O’Riley reporting for duty.”

Cal met Connor in the living room. “Hi, Connor. Good job cleaning the bungalows yesterday. I aired them out last night. Do me a favor. Get some fresh towels from the bin outside and put them in the bungalows.”

In his usual skintight white T-shirt and short-shorts, the freckled twenty-year-old saluted. “Aye, aye, Capitán.” Connor licked his red lips, which matched his frizzy hair. “Where’s Michael?”

“In the shower.”

“Does he need more towels?” Connor headed toward the bathroom.

Cal grabbed his muscular arm. “Down, boy. And keep it in your pants when the guests get here.”

Connor feigned shock. “Me? Make a play for a guest? Never! Cal, you wound me to the heart.”

“You must have studied dramatics at the college this year.”

Connor batted the long lashes over his sky-blue eyes. “How else could I have dated all the gay dudes?”

Cal laughed. “I’m sure you dated them.”

“I did.” Connor revealed his pearly-white teeth. “It was the football team last year who went straight, pardon the pun, for the touchdown.”

Cal put his arm around the boy’s wide shoulders and walked him to the front porch. “Please get straight to work so everything is ready when the guests arrive.”

Connor said with the eagerness of a child at Christmas, “I can’t wait to see our pick of the litter.”

“Look, don’t touch.”

Connor opened the front door and bumped into Carlo, whose crimson dress shirt had enough buttons open to reveal impressive pectoral muscles. “Welcome to Cozzi Cove!”

As he entered the front porch, his dark eyes glistened in the morning sun. “I’m Carlo. I’m looking for Michael Rodgers.”

Cal shut the door behind him and shook Carlo’s hand, noticing the bulge in Carlo’s black slacks. “Please come in.”

MY REVIEW

5 meows 1 purr ( beyond loved and low sexual content)

This is the third Jana lane Mystery by Joe Cosentino. I think it’s my favorite so far.  There is more action and the mystery is more complex and complete.  There are lots of characters. Fabulous eccentric characters and icky villains!  The story is based in the 1980’s and deals with a few social issues such as Aids and anorexia.

I love Jana. I love how her inner thoughts are in italics throughout the story. I think it adds a touch of humor as well as adding to her character. In this story, Jana, Brian, and her kids go to Washington DC so she can shadow the popular congresswoman her next movie is based loosely on. She meets lots of people—good and bad, has many trips and we get to sight see through her eyes. I love all the details from the scenery to the clothing. It’s a favorite era of mine as well.

If you like a fun mystery with humor and serious social issues, colorful characters and a touch of sweet, clean romance this is for you.
