Snippet Sunday

Hi, Y’all! It’s time for Snippet Sunday again. It’s February and what better time for a sweet contemporary romance? I took a different turn this week. I had a cute Idea to add to a scene in Baseball Bats and Cowboy hats. I went to drop it in and found some chapters in first person some in third person. YIKES! What was I thinking? In my defense, I was doing this in Nano which is a race to get 50K  rough draft. It’s rough all right! I decided to take a week or so and  run this one through Grammarly and get it ready for a Beta reader or two. ( If you are a big baseball fan and romance lover and may be interested I could use some help with the baseball plays, find me in contacts above.)

This is a rough draft and the only eyes on it has been mine… so remember this is a diamond in the rough please be kind. I posted this first chapter back in Nov.  I am not posting the entire chpater this time only a bit of it. I hope it reads much better this time.

I checked each room for the third time today wanting everything to be perfect. I had already chewed my nails into nubs the past week wondering if I’ve made the right decision.  Mom and my friend Vicki both agreed it was a great idea to open my home to host some of the boys for the local prospect league team. The arrangement seemed to work for everyone. It would give the players that lived farther away a place to stay closer to the field for practice and give me some help on the farm. Plus as an added bonus, I wouldn’t feel so alone. The boys would do a few chores in exchange for room and board plus meals when they were not out at practice or on the road for a game.

The City Council met in the high-school gymnasium to discuss the summer season of the Edenfield Eagles.  I saw the announcement in the community booklet the city puts out each month and felt this was something I wanted–no–needed to do.

My other best friend, Caleb Douglas, nearly had an aneurysm when I raised my hand to volunteer. I chuckle at the memory of how red his face got, the veins in his forehead popping out to the surface. It was scary then, but I could laugh about it now.

Ever since my husband passed away, Caleb has become more and more protective. Like the big brother of which I always dreamed of having.  I don’t know, if a big brother was anything like Caleb Douglas, I’m glad I didn’t have one or I’d probably be a 40-year-old virgin.  Speaking of a cockblocker, this man barely gave me room to breathe.  The local men stayed away, and the women were all jealous of how much time and energy Caleb spent on me.

It would be nice having boys around again. I admit to missing my sons now that they are grown and gone. Occasionally they visit but not as much as they used to. The big house was lonelier than ever since Stephen left a few weeks after graduation.  David left two years earlier. Now he is a proud dad. David and Casey,  his wife, lived in Iowa City and didn’t make it down to visit much. Stephen is off hiking and exploring life before going to college. Neither liked working on it getting their hands dirty. They both suggested I sell it after Steve died.  It was all I had to keep me going, and it did bring in some income.

Caleb was amazing when David’s baby was born. He stayed at the farm, took care of things for two weeks while I was out of town.  Heck, he is always amazing and would do anything I ask. He brings the feed orders out so I don’t have to go get them and doesn’t charge me a delivery fee. In exchange, he gets a home cooked meal. We both get some company. He would do more but. I couldn’t impose on him all time.

The drawbacks of a hobby farm are feeding and caring for the animals every day. My farm isn’t big enough to warrant paid hands  but a bit more than I can handle on my own.  Vicki’s’ son, Mark comes by to help with the morning goat milking, which is a godsend. That’s all he has time to do since he has a job in town.  His mom uses the milk for her soap making business and I make gourmet cheese we both sell at local markets, so he does this for us for free.

The crunch of tires on the gravel drive snapped me out of my digression. Too late to change my mind now.

I am it sure what next week will bring. One thing about me as you can never call me predictable! My plan is another week of Baseball Bats and Cowboy Hats to get it  ready for the next step, but in my world plans seem to change frequently. Hopefully you can never call me boring either LOL!

Snippet Sunday~~ Sweet and Spicy~~No not the latte

Snippet Sunday

Hi, Y’all! It’s time for Snippet Sunday again. Time to start the year off on a lighthearted, funny note.  Sweet Gypsy Rose is  a story I began in fall of 2014 after a visit to my dads. I loved the delightful tourist town and decided to make my own.  Riverton was born. Then I got sidetracked along the way with sickness and lots of family issues.

This year I plan to get a few stories written then decide which path to go on.  For those of you looking for a lighter, humorous story with a free-spirited female lead and a sexy banker that has no idea his potential, toss in a very hunky ex-boyfriend that won’t let go and a secret past, I present… Sweet Gypsy Rose… oh and don’t forget you cat lovers!

This is a rough draft and the only eyes on it has been mine… so remember this is a diamond in the rough.

“Ouch” I shout a bit too loud as a pop to my derriere propels me forward bumping my head into the glass case.

As I jerk, upright I find myself against a big bulky body. Definitely not my banker. I don’t have to turn around to see who it is since I’ve been up-close and personal to the body enough to know every dip, curve, and bulge. Especially the one growing bigger and harder against my back.

“Raymond, what are you doing?” I try to tone down my anger at being interrupted in my little display of seduction.

“I was wondering the same thing about you, sweetheart. The last time I heard you moan like that you had your mouth wrapped…” the rest comes out mumbled as I press my hand against his mouth, none too gently. Though most of the town knows about mine and Raymond’s odd relationship, I’m hoping the new man in town doesn’t.

“What are you doing in here Gypsy Rose? You told me you were going straight to work this morning? That’s why I’m here in case you were wondering since you didn’t fix breakfast. What ya want and I’ll get in line and order.”

What I wanted was Ray to leave so I could see if the new man was going to sit in here and have his coffee or take it to work with him. Maybe even see if he ordered something to eat so I would know something he liked. I tell Ray to get me the vegan banana nut muffin and my usual large buttered pecan mocha latte with soy milk. At least, I don’t have to pay for my breakfast today.

Uh oh! Looks like there may be a complication in Gypsy Rose’s plans in the form of her ex-boyfriend Raymond Patterson.

I hope you are enjoying this story and will come back next week.  If you missed meeting Gypsy Rose week one you can catch up here.  http://cathybrockman.com/2016/01/10/snippetsunday-sweet-and-funny-time/ ‎
