Yuck that’s not romantic…it ‘s gross! #MFRWauthor #ickywords

It’s week 9 of the Marketing for Romance Writers weekly blog challenge. This week’s theme is Words that make me go ick.  I am an avid reader and average at least 4 books a week. I read a lot of M/M romance and this is where I find most of my squicky words. The one highest on my list is calling a person’s hole a rosebud. Really? Rosebud? Comparing a butt to a pretty flower that smells sweet? *gags* It gets worse if they have it quivering or winking Yeah winking. If a hole winks at me when things should be all sexy, I’m getting up and running! Another one I don’t like in reading romance is describing the female’s body parts with Sex. Her sex this or that. Come on there is no part called a sex. The word leaves me cold. The same for the word heat. Heat is not a body part. Moist is another one. Moist is better left in making a good cake or maybe even chicken or pork chops. Let’s keep it out of the bedroom. I could go on and on with dirty words (especially when it comes to M/M erotic romance) but I won’t. These are the ones in reading romance that freak me the most. I am anxious to see what the other others say on this topic, especially those that do write the spicy stuff.

Now on to other icky words. Slug. Slime. To me, they are both the same and say one and I nearly throw up. Yeah, show me a spider I will probably get a container to catch it and put it out or leave it alone depending on what it is. Yet let a slug get in my path and I run screaming to the bathroom to toss my cookies. One gets in the house I am salting every baseboard in the house. A salt circle to keep those demons out! And I still probably won’t sleep that night! I hate those toys that are rubbery and you throw and they stick to the wall. The texture is just gross. The word slime is enough to make me queasy.

At least this post was good diet control. I was getting hungry but suddenly lost my appetite.

What words make you go ick?

Come see what the other authors find yucky!

Let the Music Play~ Cathy Writes Romance #MFRWauthor #music

Welcome to the MFRWauthor blog challenge week 7. This week our topic is  Music we write by. I wonder if I can count the flow of my fish tank, the hum of the refrigerator and the occasional cars that drive by. Maybe even all the kids screaming and dogs barking in the afternoon?

I don’t have any set music I listen to as I write. As a matter of fact, I do better with it quiet (except for the above). On occasion, I may turn on Pandora or YouTube but most likely for research for songs my characters may listen to. I do sometimes have a playlist for each story but rarely do I listen while I write. Not the first draft anyhow. I need to concentrate. Sometimes I do play my playlist when I do my rewrite or edits to help get in the mood of the story, so each story will have me listening to different music.

I am an 80’s rock girl, so that is what I listen to a lot. My daughter had me hooked o other things like Evanescence, Nirvana, Disturbed, so I  have a list of songs she hooked me up on as well. I guess you could say I am diversified. Here are some of my favorites.

I use to listen to music a lot while I blogged or did household chores now  I listen to audiobooks instead.

What kind of music do you like?

Now let’s go see what the other MFRWauthors like to listen to!

Thats’s Not Trash!~Thats Crafts! #MFRWauthor #hobbies #crafts

Welcome to week 6 of the 52-week MFRW blog challenge.  Each week we have a topic.

This week’s prompt is…My hobby is … When I’m not writing.

I nearly shouted in joy when I saw this topic! Hobbies? Boy, do I have hobbies!* Looks int the nearly bursting craft room.*

I  am not a hoarder.. nope I’m  sticking to it… I am a recycler and crafter. I see beauty in all things trash… well not all things but most. I use to throw it all in trash bags in a closet in my hall until I had the perfect project or time to make something with it.  Of course, then I could never find what I was looking for.

When we remodeled, a craft room was on my wish list. My husband took the old back porch we never used, enlarged it and made me a combo craft/ exercise room.  He also made me the perfect work table as well.  The table is big enough for my sewing machine, serger and cameo to sit out all the time and still have room to work. It is also big enough to cut out fabric on.

I use the kitty litter in the big yellow buckets leaving me buckets I can’t seem to toss as well.  When I had to unpack that closet, we tore out for the remodel I came up with a way to reduce my hoarding and organize as well. It also uses up those buckets. ( I knew they would come in handy and save me money on tubs!) I marked each one with the items I collect such as plastic creamer bottles, Jars, you get the Idea. When each bucket is stuffed full, I can’t keep more of that item until I use some out of the bucket. The buckets stack neatly behind my exercise equipment.

I also have my craft supplies. I have those plastic drawers I keep those in.

Sewing and Crochet are my favorite hobbies. I collect dolls of all sorts and like to sew for them,  I am starting a craft page and website to sell my goodies on in the next couple of months.

I can’t throw away old clothes since I see projects. I have tubs of jeans, t-shirts, assorted sweaters. Same rules apply. These tubs get full I have to let go the others. I have plenty things planned. I have a set of placements cut out already.

I have tons of fabric as well and yarn.  I finally got that all sorted and organized as well.

So as you see I have lots of hobbies besides writing.  Do you have any hobbies?

Don’t forget this is a blog hop. Anyone can join at any point in the MFRW 52 week challenge…  Click here.

Let’s go check out the other authors and see what their hobbies are!

Teaser Tuesday~Pot call the Kettle Black #MMM #NaNoWriMo #romance

It’s Teaser Tuesday time.  This week I am sharing Simon’s view of his first meeting with Topher. Things are about to change in both men’s lives. I know this hasn’t gotten deep into the story yet, but next week I will be switching to my current WIP.  It is the book this one spins off from, and you will meet both men there but not as in-depth.

I hope you enjoy this teaser. It does have some man on man interest so if that’s not your thing you may want to wait until next week.

Simon Plus Two is a Nano project and is extremely rough, so please forgive any mistakes it will soon see an edit.

Simon Meets Topher

I heard the door open and close. I knew it was late. I felt eyes on me but didn’t want any confrontation. I have my phone on my chest and my smartwatch on, so alarms will vibrate and not wake the other guy up. I laid my work clothes on the chair by the door, so I can slip out and not wake up Annie’s son. I had heard all about the confrontations yesterday afternoon. I had been at Max’s before the game. TJ had texted me a short version and filled me in on detail before the game.
Vibrations against my arm and one a little lower than it should be woke me up. My phone had slid precariously down my chest resting against my groin.  I quickly turn off the alarms, swing my legs over the bed and adjust my morning wood. I had some great dreams of Max and needed to head to the shower to take care of the aftermath. I caught a glimpse of blue or is it black? No maybe a mixture of both, spread above a handsome face. I saw piercings. Several of them. I’m not into that look, but they looked good on him. Real good. My erection got harder if that was possible. Suddenly brilliant green eyes met mine. He scoured my body his gaze landing on my engorged cock. I noticed his tongue flick out and moisten his lips. I could see the want in his eyes. Suddenly he jumped up.

“What the fuck are you looking at me like that for you queer!”
Hmm pot calling kettle black?
“Shh, you will have everyone rushing in here. I’m not gonna tell your secret.”
“I don’t have a secret! I—Uhh-Just—get out of my room Cocksucker!”
I could see the panic on his face. He jumps up, and immediately I see I am right. The poor guy is hard as my first attempt at biscuits.
I reach for him to calm him down. We don’t need people bursting through our door both of standing there with dueling dicks.
Too late. The door slams open nearly coming off the hinge. TJ rushes in followed by Annie. OH No. I grab my pillow, press it into the man’s arms knocking him to a sitting position on the bed. He still glares. Irate. Confused. TJ grabs for him. I step in front of TJ.
“What the Fuck! You will not call Simon those names.”
Annie stands in shock. “What did he say.”
I wince as TJ repeats what he heard.
The man sat still. I can tell he is thinking of things to deflate his problem. The commotion took care of mine. Then I realize I am standing there just in sleep pants, no shirt and my room bursting with people. I wrap my arms around myself hiding my nudeness.
TJ notices. Hey guys, why don’t ya start breakfast? They nod and head out the door leaving Annie and TJ. He hands me my shirt. I notice the other man watching as I put it on.
“Christopher. I won’t tolerate that in this house. You were raised better”. Her eyes were soft, her voice kind.
I can still see the panic in his eyes as he avoids his mother’s gaze.
“I want him out of this room. This is my room. You wanted me back. So I want my room back. Or give me enough money to get back to New Orléans and I will leave you alone.” He shouted.
“I’m sorry Christopher, but you have issues you and I have to deal with, and until then you stay. Once we work it out between us, you can go where ever you wish. Caleb said you could work afternoons and evenings with him at the feed store. I want you working some here.”
“Get him out of my room.” His breath is getting quick his hands shaking.
“I’ll work out the room arrangements with the other guys. By this afternoon we should have it all settled. I am ashamed of you Christopher.”
“TOPHER” He screams.
You all go on. I’ll be a few minutes we will be down for breakfast and decide if there needs to be a room change then. I turn to Topher. He is becoming bluer than his hair. I show them all out and slip beside him. I shake him slightly.
“Take a deep breath Topher.”
He turns to me his face ashen.
“Why don’t you want her to know. She will accept you she has been nothing but kind to me.”
“You’re not her son. Not her flesh and blood. You didn’t let her down by not following her dreams. You weren’t the selfish one that took off to follow his own dreams. You’re not the one that’s not going to give her grandkids. ”
“It’s best we continue sharing rooms. This way you can call your boyfriend, Skype, do whatever you need to be yourself. In here no pretending. But you would feel so much better if you tell you mom you’re gay.”
I expected him to deck me. Instead, he slumped into my arms and started crying hysterically.

I hope you like my guys. I have a thing about characters and I want these two men to hit you hard. One sweet the other you may not like much. At least for a while. So what do you think about Simon and Topher? do they need more development? if so what?

Sorry Editor I’m Shifty! #MFRWauthor #romance #bloghop

I do stick all those capital letters in there on purpose to keep you on your toes. Just kidding.  I have a bad habit of capitalizing out of the blue. I will be rereading my work and find capitals everywhere! That is everywhere except where they should be. I also have a bad habit of not capitalizing I.  Gosh how many times have I  put little i instead of I or ill instead of I’ll. I get in a rush and leave off apostrophes, and of course, I have issues with commas as well.

I found something that helps with the comma issues. I use a software called Grammarly.

It is an editing software that helps me with most of these things (except the capitals littering my work.) Grammarly has helped me cut back on my commas and get them in the right place. I am not recommending using this in place of a real life editor.  I use it as a tool to help save my editor time to mess with all that small stuff. Now she can focus on eliminating my capitals!

I am also very wordy.  I tend to like descriptions and writing about food. Every story I write has several meals in great detail. I don’t  know id this is a problem or not.

I have trouble finding ways to stop saying but or so, or as if.  I have come a long way in two years, after writing my first story for a story blog. I know I still have a lot to learn. Thank goodness for editors and their patience to work with me and all my issues!  I can tell my story, and they can help me find all of those goofs! I will give them job security.

Do you use a writing software along with your editor? Readers, do you like to read about things such as meals and descriptions of the settings and characters? What is overboard?
