A shelf staple for all purposes #allpurposeflour Flour

With all the things going on with this Pandemic I am doing things differently. Instead of menu planning, I am going to share basic things we can do to ease our burdens.

This week I am going to share some things we can do with something most of us have in our pantry ( if not get a big bag or two). Flour. Just plain old all-purpose is all you need ( though you will need some baking soda and Baking powder too).

Flour is versital from savory, to sweets, to thickening to even things to play with.

Use flour for dredging meat. just season it however you like to coat your meat and panfry or even bake. Here is a simple shake and bake recipe for meat. Just add other seasonings to add more flavor https://www.food.com/recipe/flour-shake-and-bake-for-chicken-108411

Make gravy and sauces; Flour is the base for most roux. https://www.pillsbury.com/recipes/white-gravy/bfb2171d-b858-4e63-be05-5e6b7d912e55 cheese sauce for veggies or pasta. https://www.allrecipes.com/article/cheese-sauce-made-easy/

Or make your own bread: https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/easy-bread-recipes-for-beginners/ Biscuits ( make them drop and add cheddar cheese) or drop them in chicken broth and make dumplings) https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/biscuits-recipe-1943493

Pancakes ( add blueberries or chocolate chips) https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/21014/good-old-fashioned-pancakes/ top with syrup or fruit and cool whip

Pie crust https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/220996/easy-homemade-pie-crust/ you can use for pies sweet or pot pie.

Cake https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/8063/cake-mixes-from-scratch-and-variations/

Pudding: https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/pudding-recipes/

And cookies: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipes/362/desserts/cookies/

And I promised for fun.. https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/no-cook-playdough/ add food color for color. Paper Mache.. use up old newspapers and make bowls https://www.hometalk.com/26866410/diy-paper-mache-bowls?

What do you do with flour? Do you have a favorite recipe you use?

  1. Great ideas, Cathy! I haven’t had a need to use flour for years. Recently I bought cooking bags to have a change in how I prepare chicken breasts. Guess what? You need a tablespoon of flour for the inside of the bag. I had forgotten and had to run to the store for a one pound bag to keep in my freezer for use in my cooking bags. You’ve reminded me that I used to make cheese sauce for mac & cheese. Miss the homemade stuff. Comfort food would be great now.

  2. Very helpful and timely post, Cathy! I do have flour in my pantry. I mainly use wheat flour for special occasion cakes and the like. For everyday “breads” I usually go with the latest sensation called CHAFFLES, a keto bread substitute usually made with eggs and cheese. However, recently I tried a recipe without cheese, one that uses almond flour and is as soft as wonder bread.
