A Writer’s Life~Kim McMahill #suspence #riskyresearchseries #crimefiction

Welcome to a writer’s life where I invite other authors to share with us writing tips, tricks, woes, and WIPs: Works in Progress or upcoming release. This week’s guest is Kim McMahill.

Hello Kim. Can you believe it’s already May? The year seems to be flying by.

Kim: No, I can’t believe it’s May, but I am so happy it is. Spring is my favorite season.

Cat: Are you ready for Summer? What do you look forward to most about summer?

Kim: I love to get outside and garden. I already have plants growing in my greenhouse, but it isn’t safe to put anything outside until the end of the month.

Cat: Do you take a vacation? If so where do you go and what do you do?

Kim: I love to travel, but my husband’s job has made summer travel impossible, so that’s something we usually do in the winter. I’ll go about anywhere and I enjoy learning about new cultures.

Cat: This month I wanted to discuss things you have found helpful on your writing journey. Who is your target customer? For non-writer readers that is who will be most likely to buy our books.

Author name: I write action adventure, romantic suspense (though light on romance), and my latest series leans toward crime fiction. My books have a wide appeal with female and male readers, especially those who like fast paced action, and multiple third person point of view (POV), which is a common writing technique used to create anticipation and suspense.

Cat: What is a problem that your target customer has?

Kim: My books appeal with those who would like to be more adventurous, but have schedules, lifestyles, or other circumstances that may limit opportunities. For those who have these issues, books are the perfect escape. Not everyone has to climb a mountain, but anyone can read about it and may experience a bit of that adrenaline rush.

Cat: Do you try to accomplish any work while travelling?

Kim: Maybe not in the traditional sense, but I find a lot of ideas and gain inspiration through travel.

Cat: Do you have an assistant or assistants? What do they do for you?

Kim: No, but I wish I did. Marketing consumes a great deal of time that I’d rather use writing my next adventure suspense novel. I love to tell stories, marketing – not so much.

Cat: What helpful books have you read recently?

Kim: I haven’t read any “how to” books lately, but reading in my genre is always helpful. For example, Clive Cussler and James Rollins are masters at using multiple third person POV, which involves writing separate scenes from the viewpoints of each of the characters, and usually each chapter is narrated from a different character’s POV. Since, like most people, I don’t have as much time to read as I like, I enjoy this type of narrative because it forms obvious breaks.

Cat: What helps you to be creative?

Author: My best muse is travel. I’m a people watcher, so travel not only gives me ideas about locations for stories, I often discover quirky traits that may find its way into a character’s profile.

Cat: What book are you here to share with us today?

  1. Gorgeous cover! Kim’s book sounds ultra intriguing, and I’ve placed it on my TBR. The heroine sounds awesome, and so does Sofia. I look especially forward to seeing into her mind.
