In the spotlight~ Katherine Eddinger Smits ~ Water Dreams #mermen #paranormalromance #temporalmagnetism

Today in the spotlight is Katherine Eddinger Smits telling us how she celebrated Valentine’s Day. She is also going to tell us about Water Dreams.

Hello Katherine

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Brainstorming for this blog sent me off into theoretical considerations about the space-time continuum and prompted me to invent a new paradigm: Temporal Magnetism.

Okay, let me explain. First, though I write paranormal romance, I read from every genre, and science fiction is one of my favorites. Since time travel is a common plot line for both science fiction and paranormal romance, I think about it a lot.

I thought about it today because the deadline to submit my What I Did for Valentine’s Day blog is February 5th. So, um, how do I write about what I did when it hasn’t happened yet? Ta da! Time travel.

But not just any time travel, because although I don’t know what my husband and I will do for Valentine’s Day this year, I know what we will probably do. He usually buys me jewelry and we go out to dinner.

However, this year will be different in a meaningful way. We will also celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary which fell on Sept. 8th. We didn’t get to do anything then because he was in the hospital following kidney surgery for a malignant mass.

After his discharge, he required several weeks of recuperation. We intended to commemorate the day when he felt well enough, but by then, Thanksgiving and the mad holiday rush enveloped us.

Now it’s February. I’m determined we’re going to observe our anniversary and Valentine’s Day at the same time. Not only do I want him to know how much I love him, I want to honor the many years we’ve been together and the successful removal of that tumor.

So, our time travel must be both to the future and the past.

As I contemplated that idea, I realized that many of our significant dates occur close together. For example, our anniversary, my husband’s birthday and our son’s birthday are all within two weeks of each other. In fact, our son was born the day before our anniversary, so I was the one in the hospital that year. Also, our daughter’s birthday and mine are both near Christmas. I was born on New Year’s Eve. Did I mention the holidays are super busy for us?

This year my husband’s life-saving surgery overlapped his birthday, our anniversary and our son’s birthday.

Wow! What could account for that? Here’s my theory. The emotions surrounding major life experiences may imbue those dates with energy and attract other influential incidents to them, so they manifest in the same time period. I call this Temporal Magnetism. I’m thinking of using it in a story.

What do you think? Have you ever noticed anything like this?

Or it could all be coincidence. The crazy writer’s imagination let out to play.

All I know is, I’m happy everything worked out for my husband, and whatever we decide to do on Valentines’ Day, it will be special this year because we’re together. He’s all I need.

Here’s a picture of a beautiful necklace my romantic husband bought me for our anniversary. He had only been out of the hospital for a week or so and he was still having trouble walking, but he insisted on going to the store and buying it for me anyway.

Thank you for having me as your guest today, Cathy. I had a lot of fun. (I know this because of time travel.)

  1. I love your books, as you know, Kathy. I agree with your temporal assessment. There is no coincidence. All has meaning, although we don’t always perceive it. Thank heaven your husband is better! Thanks for the post, Cathy.
